Manakura - Melicytus micranthus

This is related to the viola family.

Manakura provided the Maori a scent to perfume titoki seed oil or shark oil.

The bark was used (crushed) - as a cure for influenza.

Mamaku - Black Tree Fern

The Mamuki - or black tree fern is a truly majestic plant.

External uses:

  • Bruised pith applied as poultice for swellings of the foot and sore eyes.
  • The gum was chewed to stop diarrhoea.

Kokihi - New Zealand Spinach

Kokihi - New Zealand Spinach.

Used by Captain Cook to prevent scurvy.

Maori children used to make a red ink from its berries... the ink fades though!! Non-permanent tattoos - what a brilliant idea.
